DLA Piper boosts White Collar Litigation practice with former S.D.N.Y. Asst. U.S. Attorney John Hillebrecht in New York

DLA Piper announced that John Hillebrecht has joined the firm as a partner in the White Collar Practice group, resident in the firm’s New York office. He was most recently an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York.
Hillebrecht’s practice will focus primarily on white collar, complex commercial and securities litigation matters. During the course of his 15-year career as an Assistant United States Attorney, Hillebrecht led numerous high-profile investigations and prosecutions, including the highly successful investigation of New Jersey’s Decavalcante crime family (resulting in convictions of over 70 defendants on racketeering and related charges), the conviction at trial of a number of high-profile lawyers and accountants for perpetrating a multi-billion dollar tax shelter fraud (affirmed just last week by the Second Circuit), and supervision of a variety of other significant tax shelter fraud investigations and prosecutions. He has also held a number of supervisory positions, including: Deputy Chief Appellate Attorney, Acting Chief of the Complex Frauds Unit (supervising a wide range of white-collar prosecutions as well as Foreign Corrupt Practice Act investigations), and Deputy Chief of the Organized Crime and Terrorism Unit. From 2007 until leaving the U.S. Attorney’s Office last month, he also served as Senior Trial Counsel.
“John is highly regarded, both as a trial lawyer and as an appellate litigator,” said Richard F. Hans, chair of DLA Piper's New York Litigation practice. “His impressive work on a broad array of matters make him an ideal asset to our growing practice in New York and globally.”
Prior to becoming an Assistant United States Attorney, Hillebrecht worked at Cravath Swaine & Moore LLP as a litigation associate. Hillebrecht obtained his JD at Stanford University School of Law, and served as a clerk in the Second Circuit with the Honorable Irving R. Kaufman.
“DLA Piper has an excellent reputation in the areas of white collar and securities litigation. I am eager to combine my government experience with the firm’s global approach to serving clients in complex litigation matters,” said Hillebrecht.
DLA Piper’s Litigation team is comprised of more than 1,400 dispute resolution lawyers globally, including many lawyers named leaders in their fields by the most prominent independent directories. Among them are a former Chief Litigation Counsel of the SEC's Division of Enforcement; ten members of the American College of Trial Lawyers (including a past president), two former United States Attorneys, numerous former Assistant United States Attorneys, two former Deputy State Attorneys General, a former federal judge and numerous partners who are listed in The Best Lawyers in America and in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business
