John Davies and Martin Klusmann appointed to lead Freshfields global competition practice

International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has appointed John Davies and Martin Klusmann to co-head the firm’s global antitrust, competition and trade practice.
The two partners will take over on September 15 from David Aitman and Helmut Bergmann who have led the group since 2006 maintaining its standing as one of the top global competition practices with multiple number one rankings in the likes of Chambers Global, Global Competition Review's 'GCR 20' and PLC Cross-border Quarterly's 'Competition Super League'.
Freshfields senior partner Konstantin Mettenheimer says, ‘John and Martin are outstanding competition lawyers and recognised experts in their fields. Their client-driven approach, coupled with their determination to foster talent from within the firm, will ensure that we remain a market leader in this key area for our clients.’
‘We are hugely grateful to David and Helmut who have done a remarkable job leading the competition practice, sustaining its strength through a period of economic turbulence and driving forward its position in Asia and the US during a time of rapid change in competition enforcement,’ says Mettenheimer.
John Davies comments, ‘The strength of our competition practice lies in our depth and broad geographical presence, and in the last few years we have elected 10 partners in Europe, the US and Asia, giving a huge boost to our partner bench. We are looking forward to working with the team to maintain its leading market position and to meet our clients' increasing needs for experienced competition advice at a time when enforcement continues to intensify around the world.’
Martin Klusmann: ‘The rapid globalisation of business and a tougher regulatory climate have seen antitrust and competition services remain in high demand. Thankfully, David and Helmut are handing us a competition practice which is well equipped to handle the pressures of increasing government scrutiny and emerging market risk faced by our clients. We are looking forward to continuing their good work.’
