International law firm Reed Smith today announced the continued expansion of its leading global shipping group with the addition of partner Lars Forsberg (based in New York) and counsel David Myers (based in London). Lars, who joins the firm from the New York office of Holland & Knight, handles purchase and sale matters for commercial vessels and large private yachts, which involves construction contracts and contentious matters ranging from cargo claims to shipyard disputes. He has extensive experience in federal trial litigation, including multi-district cases and has acted as counsel in numerous arbitrations and alternative dispute resolutions involving commercial disputes and maritime matters. David will be rejoining the firm’s shipping group, which he left in 1994 to be partner at a niche City shipping practice. David specialises in charter and bill of lading disputes. He also has experience in marine and general insurance law. He possesses a second speciality in administrative and constitutional law both of the Caribbean and England and Wales and he will continue to practice in these fields. He returns from a spell as High Court Judge in Trinidad. The two appointments follow that of partners Jonathan Benner and Matthew Thomas, two other highly experienced maritime lawyers, who joined Reed Smith’s Washington, D.C. office in October last year and will collaborate with Lars in building out the firm’s shipping practice in the U.S. Nick Shaw, partner and head of Reed Smith’s global shipping group, commented: “Lars brings a strong maritime background in vessel finance, litigation and other maritime areas that will benefit many of our clients. He has strong personal ties to the Scandinavian market, and his transactional experience extends beyond maritime to a broad mix of international and corporate law, including energy, structured finance and government investigations and compliance. This combination of work is a great fit for the firm and especially for our New York office. We are delighted to welcome David back to the team. Historically, David worked closely with partner Charles Weller and will bolster the already strong Dry shipping team.” Lars Forsberg commented: “Reed Smith’s global shipping practice is focused on growing its maritime and transport finance capabilities, so my experience will make a significant contribution to building in that area. My practice bridges the maritime and admiralty work done in other Reed Smith offices in the U.S. and abroad, and provides strong opportunities to integrate with the firm’s existing New York capabilities. It’s a win-win for corporate clients engaged in shipping and for my ability to further develop my practice.” David Myers added: “It is marvellous to be back in London. It is even better again to be part of Reed Smith's outstanding and accomplished shipping team. The firm has grown considerably since I was last here. It offers exciting new prospects to my clients and practice. It is an energetic and energizing place.”
