International law firm Reed Smith has announced the appointment of partner Oliver Rathje to its Europe and Middle East commercial disputes group. Oliver, who was previously at Görling Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH, will join the firm to launch its commercial and corporate litigation practice in Munich. Oliver is a specialist in commercial and corporate litigation. He advises German and international clients on general commercial litigation matters, litigation for financial institutions, shareholder disputes, regulatory investigations and criminal matters as well as criminal investigations. Oliver has been a practising lawyer since early 2001. He worked for Beiten Burkhardt Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH (a major German law firm in Frankfurt) and in 2002 he joined a Weil Gotshal & Mange, where he was the head of litigation at the Munich office from 2004 to 2007. Oliver’s appointment follows that of partner Philipp Süss who joined the firm’s media and technology group in Munich (with one counsel and one associate) earlier this year. Belinda Paisley, partner and head of Reed Smith’s commercial disputes group for Europe and the Middle East, commented: “We have a strong team in Munich specialising in patent litigation and our objective has been to build our corporate and commercial litigation capabilities in that market. We’re therefore delighted that Oliver Rathje has agreed to join us and we very much look forward to him joining our team.” Stefan Kugler, office managing partner of Reed Smith’s Munich office, commented: “Our Munich office continues to work on many IP, IT and patent litigation matters for German clients as well as for clients which are cross sold from the US, UK and Asia. We’re happy to have Oliver on board, a renowned specialist for commercial and corporate litigation. We’re keen to develop the work we do regionally and we’re working to continue the expansion of our Munich offering.” Oliver Rathje added: “I am looking forward to this new challenge. With its excellent international litigation practice and its dynamic and innovative strategy, Reed Smith offers perfect opportunities to integrate my existing clients and to launch the litigation practice in Germany“.
