International law firm, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has won Legal Advisor of the Year for China and Hong Kong, and Financial Services Legal Advisor of the Year at the Financial Times Mergermarket M&A Awards Asia 2008. The awards were presented at a ceremony in Hong Kong on Tuesday. In addition, the award for M&A Deal of the Year went to China Unicom's acquisition of China Netcom, the landmark restructuring of the PRC telecoms industry, in which Freshfields played a key role as advisers to China Unicom. Robert Ashworth, Freshfields’ Asia Corporate Practice Head, said the awards were a great tribute to the firm’s strength in M&A, which saw it advise on some of the most prestigious deals in the Chinese markets this year, including the takeover offers for Huiyuan Juice and Wing Lung Bank. 'Being recognised as the top legal advisor in Hong Kong and China, the pre-eminent markets for M&A and financial services in the region, is a tremendous accolade for Freshfields,' Rob said. 'The prolonged turmoil in the financial markets, and the ensuing responses by governments in key financial centres around the world are likely to lead to more stringent global regulatory environments for the financial services industry as a whole.
