The Education Sector Group at international law firm Eversheds has been appointed to advise client PKF, on behalf of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), on funding, governance, procurement, property and employment issues for North Preston Academy and Tunbridge Wells Academy. Under the sponsorship of Charles Dunston, founder of the Carphone Warehouse,North Preston Academy will replace the provision at Fulwood High School and Arts College (having recently merged with Tulketh Community Sports College). It is proposed that the new Academy will operate from the Fulwood site and will provide secondary education to pupils from 11-18, specialising in Entrepreneurship and Sport. Tunbridge Wells Academy will replace the existing Tunbridge Wells High School, using existing buildings until 2009 and opening new buildings in 2012. The Academy will benefit from the sponsorship of West Kent Further Education, Kent County Council and The Skinners’ school. Glynne Stanfield, Head of External Relations and Governance – Education, Eversheds, comments: “We are seeing an increasing number of secondary schools seeking Academy status. Schools will benefit greatly from Academy status as the sponsors will challenge the traditional thinking on how schools are run and will seek to transform low performance. Each academy is unique, because the programme's focus is to fit each academy to its community and circumstances. The legal issues surrounding the establishment of these academies are complex. ” Gordon Dixon, Director of the Education Team at PKF said: “PKF, the DCSF and Academy sponsors continue to benefit from the strength of our relationship with Eversheds, as well as Eversheds’ knowledge of the complex issues that are faced when setting up an Academy.”
