The Education Sector Group at international law firm Eversheds has received a huge boost by being appointed by four Further Education (FE) Colleges, to provide legal advice on issues around building projects. These new contracts recognise the team’s construction expertise in the education sector. Hugh Baird College in Liverpool, John Leggott sixth form College in Scunthorpe, Rotherham College of Arts & Technology and Stanmore College in Middlesex have all called upon Eversheds to assist with Learning and Skills Council (LSC) - funded building projects which they are embarking on. The Colleges require legal advice on the acquisition of land, the procurement and appointment of contractors and other professionals such as architects and building engineers, and the securing of loans. Hugh Baird College, for example, is replacing its Balliol Centre in Bootle with a new modern building – a £40m project due for completion in 2011. FE Colleges across the UK are currently undertaking major projects to improve their campuses, which can involve complex legal agreements. Simon Chamberlain, who leads Eversheds’ firmwide team undertaking construction work for education clients, comments: “The major redevelopment of UK FE Colleges under the LSC framework involves various different parties who must work together to overcome the complex issues involved in undertaking schemes to update campuses. Colleges such as Hugh Baird, John Leggott, Rotherham and Stanmore, need to work with partners who fully understand their needs within the context of the unique issues facing the FE sector. Our unrivalled experience puts in a strong position to work with institutions and their other partners to strategically, practically and cost effectively, help them realise ambitious plans. We’re delighted to be working with all four colleges on the exciting projects they are embarking on.”
