Denton Wilde Sapte provides training for Al Jazeera

As global counsel for Al Jazeera, international law firm Denton Wilde Sapte provided a week's training to the television network's legal, engineering, human resources, editorial, new media and PR teams through presentations at Al Jazeera's headquarters in Doha, Qatar.
The presentations were on Media Law and New Media, Technology, Telecoms, Data Protection and Defamation, Employment, Corporate Governance and Changing Perceptions in the Press.
Dr Mohammed Saeed, legal advisor at Al Jazeera, said this was the first time such presentations had been held, reasons for which included Al Jazeera's rapid worldwide growth, as well as a number of actions brought against the network, one of which culminated in a case that Denton Wilde Sapte won for Al Jazeera:
"Raising awareness amongst employees at the Network could help us avoid similar cases in the future. Because most of the cases brought against us were heard in British courts, and the largest Al Jazeera office outside Doha is in London, we asked lawyers from the London office of Denton Wilde Sapte train us," he said.
Safwan Moubaydeen, Managing partner of Denton Wilde Sapte's Jordan office, who chaired the presentations along with Leigh Hall, Managing partner of the Doha office, added:
"The fact that Al Jazeera is on the ground in over 30 states and broadcasts in a large number of countries, means reporters need to be aware of the local media laws that they will be subject to. The presentations were aimed at reporters and the scenarios in which eg defamation could arise and what to do in the event of an error."
The team from London included TMT partners Rod Kirwan, John Linneker and Ingrid Silver, Employment partner Richard Nicolle, and PR Manager Deborah Rothfield. The Doha team included Leigh Hall, Safwan Moubaydeen, and assistants Romi Nayef, Aarij Wasti, Lynsey Edgar and Hannah Kennett.
