International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP is advising leading power and gas company E.ON UK plc, owned by E.ON AG, on the creation of a new joint venture with RWE Npower plc, owned by RWE AG, to develop new nuclear power stations in the UK. The 50:50 joint venture between E.ON and RWE Npower will have a long-term focus on seeking to secure sites being sold by the Nuclear Decommissioning Agency and taking them through the consents process to building and operating new nuclear power stations. The joint venture will aim to develop at least 6GW of capacity in the UK. The companies have stakes in 20 nuclear power stations around the world. The Freshfields team was led by Corporate partner Andrew Hutchings and Real Estate partner David Lewis, and included fellow partners Jonathan Isted (Regulatory and Licensing), Nicholas Spearing (Antitrust, Competition and Trade) and Colin Hargreaves (Tax), and associates Richard Thexton, Richard Burrows and Nick Jones (all Corporate) and Patrick Voisey (Tax). The team worked closely with E.ON’s in-house counsel Alex Rippon and Sara Vaughan.
