Leading Italian law firms Camozzi & Bonissoni Varrenti & Associati and Studio Associato LCA today announce that they have merged together to form a new law firm called CBA Studio Legale e Tributario (CBA). The combining of the two award-winning legacy firms to create CBA sees the arrival of a new major player in the Italian legal sector and bucks the trend seen in recent years of fragmentation within the Italian legal marketplace. CBA will have a market leading reputation in Corporate and Tax advice with particular strengths in the areas of M&A, Private Equity, Real Estate, Arbitration and Sport & Entertainment. With legal, regulatory and tax issues becoming more closely aligned, CBA is in a unique position to service the needs of its clients in these areas, both domestically and internationally. Through this merger, CBA has created a truly national law firm covering all of Italy’s main commercial centres, with the ability to service a wider range of high calibre clients. The newly created firm comprises of 45 Partners and over 180 fee-earners, with offices in Milan, Rome, Padua, Venice and also a small practice in Munich, Germany. The merger comes on the back of significant growth for both legacy firms who made a number of senior lateral hires in the last six months of 2008. They include the arrival of Paolo Omodeo Sale', a former managing partner at Andersen Legal, Paolo Berruti from Agnoli Bernardi, Paolo Esposito who joined from Allen and Overy, Claudio Guccione from Orrick and Paolo Carini, who joined from one of Italy’s leading real estate firms, Delli Santi. Angelo Bonissoni, CBA’s new Managing Partner, commented: “We are delighted to announce the arrival of CBA Studio Legale e Tributario, which brings together tax and legal advisers of the highest calibre in Italy. This merger of equals will deliver clients top class service from this dynamic new firm. We will now build our brand through our partner led approach and technical excellence, common features of the two legacy firms that made them so successful in their respective fields.” Unlike many foreign law firms which have sought to leverage their brands in the Italian market, CBA’s expansion strategy is based upon its intimate understanding of the domestic legal sector and its established relationships throughout the country. Claudio Giordano, former Senior Partner at LCA, and Francesco Camilotti, an expert in International Contracts, formerly at LCA, added: “This merger has been two years in the making as we wanted to ensure that the ‘human chemistry’ was absolutely right. Knowing that we have created a union of likeminded individuals who are excellent at what they do provides us with the solid foundations that will now allow us to realise our domestic and international aspirations. We will achieve this through organic growth of the newly merged firm, as well as by making further key lateral hires to compliment our offering.” A central part of CBA’s strategy going forward will be to win a greater number of domestic instructions through the complimentary services offered by the legacy firms and its far greater geographical reach. The firm’s increased size and capabilities will also allow it to build its international profile.
