International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has announced the appointment of renowned public procurement expert Fridhelm Marx as Of Counsel in the firm’s Berlin office. Fridhelm joins the firm from the German Ministry of Economics, where he has led a team on competition policy since 1993. Having served the ministry since 1974, Fridhelm has been very influential in the development of antitrust and competition law in Germany, and has strong links with German and European executives in the field. The move follows the appointment of Alexander Schaub, former director general of the European single market, and later director of competition at the European Commission, who joined the firm’s Brussels office in 2007. The appointment will also re-unite Fridhelm Marx with Berlin public procurement partner Hans-Joachim Prieß, a member of a commission of experts who previously advised the German economics minister on the reform of public procurement law. Commenting on the appointment, Wolf Spieth, managing partner of the Berlin office, said: “By focusing on regulatory and corporate issues, Freshfields is continuing to build its strong links to politics and business alike, at the heart of the largest European economy. With his outstanding public procurement expertise, Fridhelm’s appointment strengthens our regulatory practice on both a German and European level.”
