Freshfields announces new financial services partner in Asia

International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP today announced that senior Citigroup lawyer Royce Miller is to join the firm as a partner to lead the firm’s financial services practice in Asia.
Royce, who is currently Managing Director and General Counsel of Citigroup’s Asia Pacific Institutional Clients Group, will join the firm’s Hong Kong office in early 2010.
As part of the financial services practice, Royce will work alongside established Hong Kong- based financial institutions dispute resolution partner Richard Chalk, Hong Kong-based corporate partner Robert Ashworth and Shanghai-based corporate partner Melissa Thomas.
Commenting on the appointment, Michael Raffan, partner and head of the firm’s financial services group, said, ‘Royce is one of the leading general counsel in Hong Kong; his joining Freshfields to help grow our presence in the financial services market in Asia is a real coup. Globally, the firm is highly regarded for its financial services capabilities and Royce’s appointment will further strengthen our Asian financial services presence.’
Freshfields’ Asia managing partner Simon Marchant said: ‘Royce’s experience at Citigroup adds a depth of understanding to the firm’s financial services offering that our Hong Kong clients will find extremely valuable. Current global reforms, together with the continuing expansion of legislative requirements in mainland China, are placing increasing importance on the need for sound regulatory and risk advice. Royce will have an immediate impact advising our clients on the ever-changing financial landscape in Asia and I look forward to working with him.’
Royce notes: ‘Asia’s economic growth is giving rise to huge opportunities for financial institutions. As the region’s economies grow and mature, regulatory scrutiny is intensifying. I look forward to helping clients understand the increasing risks and navigate the regulatory landscape as they develop their businesses over the next decade.’
