A cross-disciplinary team from international legal practice Norton Rose LLP has acted for HSBC in its victory in the European Court of Justice in a claim for repayment of stamp duty reserve tax paid in on April 1 2000 when HSBC acquired CCF (now HSBC France). The judgment was given on Thursday, 1 October. The case is noteworthy; it is the first ECJ decision on UK stamp duty, has potentially opened the way to many similar claims and has already prompted a change in law. The Norton Rose LLP team was led by Dominic Stuttaford and Charles Evans with assistance from Kate Denholm.
