Clifford Chance has recognised outstanding contributions in the fields of human rights, supporting the LGBT1 community and cutting environmental impact in the inaugural Clifford Chance Corporate Responsibility Awards. The awards, which were launched this year to recognise the corporate responsibility (CR) efforts from around Clifford Chance's international network, are based on grass-roots nominations from around the Firm. Nominees were put forward for contributions to the community, strengthening diversity and the Firm's commitment to the environment, reflecting the three strands of Clifford Chance's CR strategy. The winners, announced by Managing Partner David Childs and Senior Partner Stuart Popham, are: · Chris Lane, from Washington, who led a team of lawyers covering Sierre Leone's former president Charles Taylor's trial for war crimes to help ensure the people of West Africa could follow the proceedings. He also worked on the representation of four detainees in Guantanamo Bay · Arcus, the London LGBT network, for its work supporting and engaging with the LGBT community both in the Firm and the wider community. · Pascal Deijs, who has led initiatives to raise environmental awareness in Clifford Chance's Amsterdam office resulting in a fall in the carbon emissions of that office of more than 40% Each winner received £1,000 to donate to the charity of their choice. In addition, five further nominees in the community category were awarded special commendations to reflect the level of their achievements in projects varying from helping to set up NGOs to driving support for local orphanages and schools. Stuart Popham comments: "It was a genuine delight to host these awards. We were almost overwhelmed by the number of nominations, and it is a privilege to be able to reward the efforts of those in the Firm who go above and beyond their already busy schedules to make a difference." David Childs comments: "Corporate responsibility is an important part of what Clifford Chance stands for as a firm. We already have a broad CR programme in place, which receives tremendous support, but by showcasing these outstanding examples we hope we will inspire those within the firm to even better things.
