Herbert Smith hires financial services regulatory expert

Herbert Smith announced that it has recruited to its partnership Jenny Stainsby, currently Head of Regulatory in Group Legal at Lloyds Banking Group.

Jenny will join Herbert Smith's financial services regulatory (FSR) and bank litigation teams in the firm's disputes practice. Her focus will be on regulatory advice, investigations and litigation work, for the retail banking industry and regulatory work for retail insurance companies. Her joining date is being finalised.
Jenny was Head of Group Litigation and Regulatory Counsel at HBOS prior to taking on her current role in March 2009 following the acquisition of HBOS by Lloyds TSB. Before taking on these in-house roles Jenny worked at Herbert Smith, joining the firm as a trainee in 1997 and specialising in dispute resolution and contentious regulatory matters for financial institutions.
Herbert Smith is widely recognised as having among the leading FSR and banking litigation practices in the City of London. Disputes arising out of the downturn and a raft of regulatory developments have led to both practices being particularly busy of late and demand is expected to grow further in 2010.
The retail financial services sector is going through a period of unprecedented regulatory change. Jenny's specialist knowledge of the sector and regulatory expertise in respect of retail banking and insurance will complement the firm's strong relationships with a number of major retail financial institutions and help to develop further these relationships.
Martyn Hopper, head of Herbert Smith's FSR practice, commented: "We are as delighted to welcome Jenny back to the fold as we were sorry to lose her when she left to join HBOS. She is a very talented lawyer and her in-house experience has given her a specialist understanding of what retail financial institutions seek from their legal advisers that few of our competitors have at partner level. With the current focus of regulators on retail markets and products, her recruitment is also very timely."
