Norton Rose advise on first main telecommunications link from Europe to West Coast Africa

International legal practice Norton Rose LLP has today announced financial close acting for the lenders on the Main One Cable System Project; an underwater sea cable system stretching from Portugal to Nigeria and Ghana with landings along the route in various West African countries. It is the first cable down the west coast of Africa.
The lenders were African Development Bank, DEG, Skye Bank, First Bank of Nigeria and FBN Bank (UK).
The transaction completed on 14 January 2010 with the scale of the debt being US$240 million.
This primary telecommunications link from Europe to West Coast Africa is the first of its kind to provide a considerable increase in the available bandwidth in the countries it reaches.
Lead partner and head of Norton Rose’s Infrastructure practice, Martin McCann said:
“This is truly a transformational project for Africa, as anyone who has called any of the West African states will testify. This much needed telecoms link has been the subject of several proposed submarine cable projects. The Main One project sponsors and lenders faced real competition from other projects to get the financing in place and to complete the project first but they delivered.
“African telecommunications projects are now a growing market with several more submarine cable projects currently in procurement”.
Norton Rose LLP also advised Citibank (London branch), the Security Trustee, on the deal with a team led by London banking partner, Farmida Bi.
Banwo and Ighodalo in Nigeria acted as the main borrower’s counsel and Ocean Specialist Inc were technical advisers on the deal.
