Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that Josh Cohn, one of the foremost international derivatives specialists, has joined its New York office as a partner, leader of the US Derivatives & Structured Products practice and co-leader of the global Derivatives & Structured Products practice. Also named a co-leader of the practice is Edmund Parker, who is also leader of the Derivatives & Structured Products practice at Mayer Brown’s London office. Mr. Cohn previously was a partner in the New York office of Allen & Overy and a member of the Magic Circle firm’s international capital markets practice. A specialist in derivatives who represents dealers and end-users in a wide range of transactions, he has extensive experience as US counsel to the International Swaps and Derivatives Association. “Josh is a world class lawyer who will help our clients to shape and position themselves to take advantage of fundamental changes in the regulation of the derivatives industry,” said Paul Jorissen, a Finance partner at Mayer Brown and member of the firm’s Management Committee. Mr. Cohn’s hiring continues the growth trend for Mayer Brown’s New York office, which in the last 12 months has added 10 lateral partners in practice areas including global projects, capital markets, intellectual property, litigation and insurance and reinsurance. Mr. Cohn has been most recently involved in many aspects of derivatives and structured transactions in insolvency and dispute, as well as in clearing house and regulatory reform. “The derivatives market is global not local,” Mr. Cohn said. “Mayer Brown’s platform in the Americas, Europe and Asia was a big draw for me. I'm looking forward to joining forces with Edmund Parker in London. Together we can continue the rapid expansion of Mayer Brown’s global Derivatives and Structured Products practice.” Added Mr. Parker, “Josh is a first class lawyer. With only a handful of firms able to play at the top level in the Americas, Europe and Asia, the wealth of experience and expertise which he brings us will have an immense impact.” Prior to joining Allen & Overy, Mr. Cohn was a derivatives counsel at Cravath Swaine & Moore in New York; a senior vice president and general counsel at DKB Financial Products, Inc.; and a first vice president and counsel at Security Pacific National Bank. Mr. Cohn received his JD from Columbia University in New York and also served as a law clerk at the US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit in San Francisco.
