Norton Rose advises banks on financing to Linkem for development of WiMAX business in Italy

International legal practice Norton Rose Studio Legale has advised UniCredit Corporate Banking S.p.A., as mandated lead arranger, facility agent and lender, as well as Credito Bergamasco S.p.A., Banca Popolare di Vicenza S.c.p.A., Banca Popolare di Milano S.c.a.r.l. and Banca Popolare di Lodi S.p.A., as lenders, in connection with a strategic financing to Linkem S.p.A. for the expansion and development of its WiMAX business in Italy.
Mario LisantiBy 2014, Linkem, having been awarded WiMAX frequency rights in 13 Italian regions and with a €220 million investment programme in place, will cover 70 per cent of Italian territory with the innovative WiMAX system.
To date, projects are underway in the regions of Lombardy, Veneto, Lazio, Campania, Puglia, Calabria and Sicily, while WiMAX systems have already been installed in the provinces of Brescia, Bari, Crotone, Messina, Latina, Cremona, Lodi, Milan and Catanzaro. With this technology, selected clients will also have access to new and innovative services, as was the case with the wireless broadband coverage provided by Linkem on the occasion of the 13th annual world swimming championships, which were held in Rome in July 2009.
Investment companies including Ramius Capital Group, Vintage Investment, SOPAF and 2G Investimenti, which are well known for having interests in the IT industry, have stakes in Linkem.
The Norton Rose team, based in Milan, was led by banking partner Mario Lisanti and included associates Domenico Petrone and Alberto Castelli and trainee Domenico Masucci. Linkem S.p.A. and its parent company AFT S.p.A.
were assisted by Carmelo Raimondo, partner, Marco Paruzzolo, associate, and Marco Amoruso, trainee, all of the Milan office of Chiomenti Studio Legale.
Mario Lisanti commented: "We are delighted to have been involved in this transaction, one of the few capex financings to a tech company to have reached financial close in recent months. The success of the transaction in this difficult market indicates the solid foundations on which the borrower's business plan is based as well as the commitment of the sponsors and the banks to support development of innovative technology like WiMAX."
