International legal practice Norton Rose LLP has advised major European utility E.ON on its successful bid to progress to the next stage of the UK Government competition to build one of the world's first commercial scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) demonstration projects. The transaction documentation was signed on 12 March 2010. Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Milliband said that E.ON's project, together with a separate project from Scottish Power, are "at the forefront of the UK's efforts to build one of the first commercial-scale clean coal plants in the world" and that development of this technology "has the potential to support tens of thousands of jobs and bring billions to the economy"*. The Norton Rose LLP team team advising E.ON was led by London based energy partner Peter Hall with assistance from Steven Towell, Jessica Bethell-Jones (currently on secondment at E.ON), Kate Freeman and Lale Kemal and with specialist advice on IP issues being provided by corporate finance partner Mike Knapper and associate James Russell. Lead partner Peter Hall, Norton Rose LLP, said: “CCS is a key feature of the carbon emission debate and to be involved in the discussions surrounding the legal framework for the potential development of one of the world’s first commercial-scale clean coal plants has been a real privilege. Energy and climate change are areas in which Norton Rose excel and a focused practice like ours thrives on the challenges thrown up by new developments like CCS." CCS is a key technology in the effort to reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuel power stations and, given worldwide dependence on coal, is a vital technology to securing the world's future energy needs and tackling climate change.
