Norton Rose Group, the international legal practice, announced that Professor Robert Merkin is to join the Group in London as a consultant to the Insurance/Reinsurance and International Arbitration teams. Professor Merkin is Research Professor of Commercial Law at Southampton University and has a wealth of experience in the legal arena. He has taught all aspects of commercial law, including marine insurance, insurance, competition, arbitration and dispute resolution at postgraduate level. He will provide advice on discrete points of law, procedure or market practice across Norton Rose Group and will assist with publications and lectures both in-house and for clients. Rob’s published books and articles include leading texts on insurance, reinsurance and arbitration law. He is co-editor of the Lloyd’s Law Reports. He is a consultant to the English and Scottish Law Commissions for their project on insurance contract law reform, and has prepared a research paper for the Commissions on the Australian experience of reform. His recent appointments include President-Elect of the British Insurance Law Association for the 2010-12 term, Distinguished Visitor, Singapore Academy of Law and the Presidential Council of the International Association of Insurance Law. In 2009, Professor Merkin delivered the Geoff Masel Memorial Lectures in each Australian state capital for the Australian Law Insurance Association. We are building a world class team in that part of the world and Rob will be an important part of that.” This announcement follows the recent strengthening of the insurance team with the appointment of Anna Tipping in Singapore from Linklaters, and Lynn Yang from Allen & Overy in Shanghai, bringing the global number of insurance partners to 44 in the Norton Rose Group. According to Chambers UK 2010 which ranks Norton Rose LLP in Tier 1 for Insurance: Non contentious, “Norton Rose has had a resoundingly successful year, demonstrating its impressively comprehensive insurance and regulatory practice, and the all-round capability and pragmatic approach of its lawyers”.
