DLA Piper has been selected by ARJEL, the new French public body established to monitor and control the implementation of the new online betting regulations. On 6 April 2010, a new law was passed legalising online gambling in three areas, sport, horse racing and poker. To ensure that the law is properly applied, the French Ministry of Finance has created the public body ARJEL (Autorité de Régulation des Jeux en Ligne or Online Gaming Control Authority). DLA Piper was selected to advise ARJEL following its competitive tender for bids from law firms to support its objectives. It will now advise the public body on contentious and non contentious matters in the area of competition law, EU and international law, and sport law. Patrick Boiron, Head of Intellectual Property & Technology at DLA Piper in Paris, comments: "DLA Piper is very proud to be selected as one of ARJEL's key legal advisors. The principal function of these new laws, which come into force in advance of the 2010 World Cup, is the controlled liberalisation of the online gambling market in France, including opening the market to online bookmakers, and therefore stripping La Française des Jeux and Pari Mutuel Urbain (PMU) of their monopoly positions on French gambling and horse betting."
