International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has appointed Alan Rae Smith as a finance partner in its energy projects team which advises clients on local and multi-jurisdictional project finance and investment activities in the oil and gas, renewables, power and mining and metals sectors. Most recently a partner at Allen & Overy, Alan will join Freshfields early in May. Alan Newton, Freshfields’ global head of finance, said, ‘Alan is a well known and highly respected energy and natural resources legal expert having worked in a number of jurisdictions and led on major, multi-jurisdictional projects. His appointment underpins our absolute commitment to the energy sector.’ ‘Alan’s understanding of the energy asset base will be invaluable to both our global finance practice and to our energy and natural resources sector group,’ said Newton. Freshfields’ sector-led approach ensures clients have access to collaborative, cross-practice expertise which is incredibly beneficial to businesses in the energy and natural resources sector.’ Profile Alan Rae Smith Alan has been a solicitor for more than 20 years and partner at Allen & Overy since 1993 where he was head of the firm’s Hong Kong banking department for four years from 1997. He was the firm’s lead London partner on oil & gas project finance matters and has a wealth of experience in the other parts of the energy sector. He specialises in project finance, particularly in the oil and gas and power sectors and has led teams advising on projects in jurisdictions including the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, Bulgaria, Vietnam, Turkey, Philippines, South Korea, Hong Kong and India. Alan has an MA in law from Downing College, Cambridge. Alan was also voted Project Finance Lawyer of the Year 2009 by Who's Who Legal.
