NOTICIAS/ NEWS DEALS - OPERACIONES published July 20, 2010 SJ Berwin advises Starwood capital on Europe's largest hotel deal this year, following one of the biggest city office sales of the year International law firm SJ Berwin has advised new client Starwood Capital on the structuring of its joint venture with London & Regional to buy the Cumberland Hotel at London’s Marble Arch. The joint venture vehicle bought the 1,019 bedroom hotel from Royal Bank of Scotland, in what is believed to be the largest hotel deal in Europe this year. The SJ Berwin team was led by corporate real estate partner and hotel specialist, David Ryland, assisted by Associates Steven Cowins, Michael James and Darren Rogers. Associate David Parton advised on construction aspects. London & Regional was led by Leonard Sebastian, Group Manager and Legal Director, assisted by Nabarros. David Ryland commented, “This was a structured joint venture to acquire an interesting asset, which needed to be completed within a very short time scale. This is the first time we have acted for Starwood and we were delighted to have the opportunity to work with them.” This deal follows on from SJ Berwin recently advising Evans Randall on the sale of Milton Gate; Addleshaw Goddard’s HQ to a Middle Eastern investor, in what was one of the biggest City office deals of the year. This transaction was again led by a Corporate Real Estate Partner, David Ryland assisted by Tax Partner Heather Corben and Michael James.
